The Merkers Mine Experience and the Boiler Festival at the Wintershall Power Station: An unforgettable adventure

In March 2024, a door opened for AGO to a fascinating world: the Merkers Mine Experience. Our valued client, K+S Minerals and Agriculture GmbH, invited us on an unforgettable excursion that took us deep into history and the wonders of nature.

We were welcomed with a hearty “Glückauf” at the mine’s visitor centre and then descended hundreds of metres into the depths in a mine cage. The highlight of our journey was undoubtedly the discovery of the Crystal Grotto, a unique natural treasure located 800 metres below ground. This breathtaking formation, discovered in 1980, is not only the deepest point of the mine but has also been designated a National Geotope. A music and light installation, specially composed for the crystal cave, made the huge crystals – some with edges up to a metre long – sparkle and enchanted us all.

But that wasn’t the end of our adventure. The journey took us on to the mine’s former main bunker, a vast hall that still houses the world’s largest underground bucket-wheel excavator. This site has been transformed into a concert hall, situated 500 metres below ground level and boasting the acoustics of a Gothic church nave. Here we enjoyed extraordinary musical experiences that will remain in our memories for a long time to come.

Afterwards, we celebrated the boiler festival together at the Wintershall power station, where we toasted the successfully installed steam boiler plant. The boiler plant consists of two new double-flue, large-water-tube boilers, each with a capacity of 50 t/h of superheated steam. One boiler weighs approx. 90 t, is approx. 11.5 m long, approx. 4.7 m wide and approx. 5 m high.
