AGO GmbH Energie und Anlagen wins the 2022 Bavarian Energy Award

Munich, 19 October 2022:

The Bavarian Energy Prize 2022, awarded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, was presented today to AGO GmbH Energie + Anlagen. The Kulmbach-based company received the main prize for its newly developed high-temperature heat pump for industrial and municipal heat supply. The prize is intended to recognise companies in Bavaria that have distinguished themselves in the fields of new energy technologies, renewable energies and energy efficiency.

AGO GmbH Energie + Anlagen from Kulmbach received the award for the world’s first high-temperature heat pump, called ‘AGO Calora’, which it developed based on the natural ammonia/water mixture and which enables heat supply of up to 150 °C.
The heat demand in industry and also in district heating is often at temperatures well above 100 °C and has so far been met almost exclusively by the combustion of fossil fuels. Together with Stadtwerke Neuburg an der Donau, AGO therefore erected an initial demonstration plant last year with a heating capacity of approximately 1 megawatt, in which heat from a low-temperature heat network is used as a heat source and fed into a hot water network to supply a malting plant at 135 °C. This successfully patented heat pump solution enables a CO2-free heat supply on an industrial scale of approximately 0.5 megawatts to approximately 10 megawatts per heat pump, with exceptionally high efficiency.

Günther Hein, the managing director responsible for the technical division, is delighted with this award and emphasises: “The AGO Calora high-temperature heat pump developed by AGO is a significant building block for the transformation of municipal and industrial heat supply in Germany, particularly in today’s climate.”

About the Bavarian Energy Prize:

The prestigious Bavarian Energy Prize has been awarded every two years since 1999 by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs in five categories, each carrying a prize of 4,000 euros. The main prize, worth 10,000 euros, is awarded to recognise a particularly outstanding achievement and pioneering cutting-edge technology. AGO is delighted to receive this award for its innovative high-temperature heat pump.
