Winners of the 2022 Energy Efficiency Award

Berlin, 14 November 2022:

Together with GEA Refrigeration Germany GmbH and Stadtwerke Neuburg an der Donau, AGO GmbH Energie + Anlagen has won the Energy Efficiency Award 2022 in the category “Achieving more together! Energy services as enablers of the energy transition”.

In collaboration with GEA Refrigeration, AGO has developed a high-temperature heat pump using the natural working fluid ammonia, capable of reaching temperatures of up to 150°C. This enables industrial companies, municipal utilities and local authorities to switch their heat supply – currently generated using natural gas – to a CO2-free heat supply.

As part of a BMWK-funded R&D project, the world’s first high-temperature heat pump of this kind was realised in collaboration with the Neuburg an der Donau municipal utility. A key component in the systems is the piston compressor, which was developed by GEA specifically for heat pump applications.

Since 2007, the German Energy Agency (dena) has been presenting the Energy Efficiency Award to innovative and creative entrepreneurs whose projects and concepts increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The prize is endowed with a total of 30,000 euros. The nominees and winners also receive a seal for their public relations work.

The focus is on projects aimed at saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions, as well as concepts that demonstrate how the path to climate neutrality and the transformation of industry can be successfully achieved. Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck has been secured as patron of the Energy Efficiency Award 2022. The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and KfW are supporting the competition.

“We are delighted to have received a further accolade for our Calora high-temperature heat pump with this innovation project, alongside the Bavarian Energy Prize 2022, in collaboration with our partner GEA Refrigeration and Stadtwerke Neuburg an der Donau,” said Managing Director Günther Hein.
